How Many Steps Should You Walk Per Day?

September 8, 2026

The 10,000-steps-a-day target is one of the most widely repeated fitness benchmarks — but its origin is more marketing than medical research.

Where 10,000 Steps Came From

The number traces back to a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign, not a specific clinical recommendation. That doesn’t make it a bad target, but it isn’t a scientifically derived threshold either.

What Research Actually Suggests

More recent research suggests meaningful health benefits, including lower mortality risk, start accruing well before 10,000 steps, with benefits continuing to increase with more steps up to a point. Any increase in daily steps for people who are currently inactive tends to provide health benefits.

Track Your Progress

Rather than fixating on a single universal number, use our Steps to Calories Calculator to see how your current activity translates into calories burned and distance covered, and build from there.
